Each session lasts about an hour. The needles themselves are very thin, and the sensation when they are inserted range from a small prick to nothing at all. Needles are typically retained for 20 minutes to an hour. The treatment points are often located on the arms, legs, abdomen, or back, so wearing loose comfortable clothing is helpful to your treatment.
Your intake will be done privately, but the treatment itself is in a communal space with other patients. We ask that you respect the privacy and quiet healing of other patients in the room. This communal style of treatment has been done for years in China, and allows this to be an affordable clinic.
You can expect many questions about your health during your initial session, some of which will be targeted to your condition and others for gauging your overall health. We will even ask to look at your tongue and take your pulse to get a better picture of what’s going on in your body. Acupuncture is a holistic medicine, and a thorough picture of your health is essential to treatment.
Most patients feel very relaxed during the treatment session, many even fall asleep. It’s also not uncommon to get an energy boost after a treatment, and then to sleep soundly that night.
Meeting your health goals will likely require a course of treatments. How long the course runs will depend on the severity of the condition, your body’s reaction to the acupuncture, and your willingness to invest time and effort into self care at home. An acute case might resolve after only a few treatments, but chronic conditions often require long-term care.
